Hi friends! This is one of those projects that reminds me why I love crafting with paper, especially for the holidays and winter. I had set out to make a Poinsettia card, but my preference was to make a life-size version, so I made a large gift tag instead. If you’re looking for a festive Poinsettia Gift Tag Tutorial, this one is dreamy, sparkly, and so much fun to make!

Supplies Used:

  • Christmas Flower Poinsettia SVG Cut File & Clipart
  • Cardstock in various autumn colors
  • Adhesive
  • Cutting machine, such as a Cricut machine or Silhouette Cameo
  • Ball stylus (dotting tool)
  • Foam mat – the squishier the better
  • Dark red ink (optional)
  • Clear chunky glitter
  • Marker for writing
  • White acrylic paint for splatter
  • Fan-shaped paint brush for splatter
  • String or ribbon

Make a DIY Poinsettia Gift Tag

1. Import the separated SVG file into your cutting machine software. I often bring in the assembled version, too. I use it as a visual assembly guide.

2. Resize the image as desired the tag. Mine is 6 ¼ x 3 1/8”. I draw the shape on the screen to aid in this.

3. Cut all shapes in the desired papers.

4. Assemble and glue each layer and set aside to dry. Don’t assemble the whole flower yet.

5. Place the layers of leaves on the foam mat. Using the ball stylus, use pressure downward and drag all the veins of each leaf. (Poinsettias do not have petals – they are all leaves.) The tool’s shape and movement will begin to curl the edges inward. The squishier the mat is, the more rise you can get.

6. Shape all three layers of leaves. These should resemble the photo below.

7. I chose to add a little bit of dark red ink to the center of the top layer and a little bit on the leaves.

8. Glue all the layers of leaves and the center pieces together.

9. Dab some clear-drying glue to the center and smear some randomly on the leaf edges. Sprinkle clear glitter for a snowy effect. (You can use embossing powder if you are not a fan of glitter, but I personally think this is a better result for a snowy look.)

10. Adhere the poinsettia to the tag, leaving some space at the top.

11. Using a marker, add some embellishment on the edges and write “To” and From” at the top. Be sure to leave space to write the names later. I am using a white acrylic marker.

12. Dab some of the white paint on a paint tray or media surface and dilute with a little water. Using a fan brush, pick up some and tap the brush over the tag to enhance the snowy effect. I covered the “To” and “From” with scrap paper during this to avoid splatter on the words. Let dry then add the string and you are done!
