08 Layered Shark Cake Topper DIY

Hi there, it’s Dorlene, and I’m sharing a cake topper I made for my granddaughter’s second birthday.  She loves Baby Shark – what two-year-old doesn’t? – So I decided to use that as the theme.

I used the Cute Shark cut file for the main element on this topper. How many of you are singing now?  LOL

When designing a cake topper, the first thing I do is select the base. In this case, it’s a circle ring. The main image is the shark, so I place and size it to stand out. Since my granddaughter, Jhene, is the birthday girl and part of the song, I selected a fun font on Design Space and created an offset for it. Once the offset was made, I welded it to the ring. All other elements were created and added to the ring to finish the design.

This shark is so cute and easy to put together. I love all the layers, especially those tiny teeth!

All the pieces that needed assembling were put together first before deciding on the dimensions.

All the words, except TWO, were glued directly on their bases. I added some white and black pen marks for more fun!

The water drops are four layers of cardstock instead of using foam adhesive because they were so tiny. Ok, I know you’re singing now! Doo, Doo, Doo, Doo, Doo!

The only thing left is to add extra layers of foam adhesive so the shark really pops.

Here’s the final topper. The total height is 6.5″ without the sticks (I use flat wooden coffee sticks for mine).

When you look at the overall topper, you can see that it’s basically shapes, text and a lot of offsets. The most important thing to remember is layers. All the dimensional adhesives give this more interest. Some elements are flat; some have cardstock layers; some are one layer of 3D foam; and the shark has two layers of 3D foam.

This layered shark cake topper DIY is easy to create. I hope this encourages you to create your custom cake topper for your next celebration!
