01 Inking onto Fabric

Hello friends!  This is Linh or LV Handcrafted across the socials. I always forget that so many different inks will work on fabric. Instead of cutting and applying heat transfer vinyl, I inked up this zippered pouch with Memento Luxe ink

I started by cutting a positive stencil (meaning you don’t have to mirror your design) out of cardstock. I used this fun Lucky Me SVG file, which has more layers than what you’re seeing, but I picked the main design for my stencil. You can use mylar instead of cardstock if you want to create a stencil that you can use over and over again, but lightweight cardstock is great for one-use stencils.

Tips:

  • I used a dotty tape runner on the back of my cardstock stencil to hold it tightly to my project.
  • Make sure to read the ink you use. Some of them, like the Memento Luxe, require heat setting on fabric before it’s permanent. This is especially necessary if you are inking onto something that might need to go through the wash.
  • Using a fabric ink, similar to screen printing, results in keeping the feel of the fabric. If you don’t like the feel of stiff vinyl on your fabric, try using a fabric ink!
