Hello there! I made this fun fold slimline card perfect for any spring occasion! It can be an Easter card, get well, birthday, Mother’s Day, or just simply because. It is fun and cheery. This DIY Spring Fun Fold Slimline Card is extra cute because the gate opens to reveal butterflies inside.

01 DIY Slimline Gate Fold Card

Supplies:

Cut the sheet of blue cardstock to 8.5 x 7 inches. Fold in half (at 3.5”) so that you have an 8.5 x 3.5 inch card base. This is known as a slimline card and it fits in a size 10 envelope. Save the leftover piece for later.

Draw a rectangle in your design software that is the same measurement of the slimline card, 3.5 x 8.5 inches.

Add all three design files to the software. Resize the fence to fit the length of the slimline rectangle. Resize, duplicate, and position the flowers how you would like on the screen. Add additional flowers, if desired, that can be used on the inside. Size the butterflies so that they all fit the size of the fence gate. The gate will open in the finished project to reveal the butterflies. Duplicate the strip of grass too.

Move all pieces to the side. Duplicate the fence piece and separate/ungroup all the layers. The goal here is to create a blue piece to adhere to the inside of just the gate so it looks like the blue background everywhere else. Do this by choosing the “Draw a Polygon” tool and trace the outer edge of just the gate. You can adjust points as needed. Delete the extra fence pieces. Keep the new polygon and cut it out with the extra paper from the first step.

Separate all the design elements on the screen and cut each out in the colors of your choice. You do not need to cut out the rectangle representing the card base.

Assemble and adhere the layers of each element. The blue piece we created goes on the back of the gate.

Assemble and adhere the design on the card base in this order:

  • One strip of grass along the bottom. If the length is too short, just center it.

  • Both pieces of the fence, but do not glue the gate closed. You want that to open and close. Open the gate to add a crease to the hinges.
  • The grass on both sides of the gate.
  • The flowers on both sides of the gate and also inside the gate (but not on it). I use foam adhesive to pop up some flowers to add dimension. I don’t add foam adhesive to flowers behind the gate.
  • The butterflies behind the gate. Be sure to hide them behind it and not too far toward the top.

You can add a cute message on the inside of the gate if you would like one there. Add some white gel pen details on the flowers.

Add a sentiment on the inside of the card. This DIY Spring Fun Fold Slimline Card would make a nice Mother’s Day card, birthday card, get well card, and more. I typically wait until I am ready to use the card to add the sentiment.
