Hi there, it’s Dorlene and I have a cute project to share with you. When I saw the Easter Chick SVG File E596, I knew exactly how I was going to use it. I needed these little chicks on all my Easter decorations so I created a super cute DIY Easter cake topper.
After uploading the file into Cricut Design Space and adding it to my canvas, I ungrouped the images so I could remove the chicks that are meant for vinyl which in this case is the bottom grouped images.
I ungrouped the images and duplicated the chick inside the cracked egg shell two times. On one of the chicks, I removed the top egg shell by selecting the image and ungrouping the one chick.
Once you select the top egg shell, click on the trash icon on the upper right side and that will remove it.
This is also how you can change the colors. Select the portion you want to change and then go to the Operation area on the top left and click on the color square. Click on the color you want. Now remember, this is the color on the canvas not necessarily the color material that you’re placing on the mat when cutting.
Now to design the cake topper.
The first thing to do is to decide what shape to use for the base. I decided to use a vertical banner for mine. I used the Tilde banner which is included with Access membership in Basic Shapes. A similar banner cut file is also included in the Ribbon Scroll Banners SVG Set.
Go ahead and size the banner to fit your needs. (On average, my cake toppers are approximately 6” long.)
At this time, I changed the size of the chicks too. And then just start playing with the placement. I decided to only use four of the chicks as shown on the picture below. So I removed the other two from the canvas so I wouldn’t get confused.
I love dimension on my cake toppers so once I was happy with the chick placement, I duplicated the entire image and then welded them together to get a solid base. I’ll need two of these; one for the front placement guide and one for the background (the sticks will be sandwiched between these).
How to Make Easter Cake Topper
Click on MAKE to cut the pieces. Adhere the chicks together and decide at this time if they are going to lay flat against each other or will you use foam adhesive. I did a little of both.
Then to assemble the cake topper, adhere the banner piece on top of the top base. I used foam adhesive to create the first dimension of the cake topper. It’s hard to see here because both pieces are white.
I like to use a lot of foam adhesive to add dimension to my cake toppers. It’s not a requirement, but it does add more interest to the final project plus it’s just fun!
I used different levels of dimension to each of the chicks and one of them was layered behind the banner with only its feet showing on the front of the banner.
The stamped “Happy Easter” sentiment adds more color & fun to the cake topper.
Here’s a closer look at the small details I added using a white pen.
I love the clean look on the back when adding that second solid piece over the wooden sticks.
Cake toppers are one of my favorite things to make. Once the occasion is over, you can remove the sticks and use it in your scrapbook layouts.
