Hello there! I wanted to make a fun pair of earrings to celebrate Independence Day this year. It’s a big one since we are celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday! The best part about this project is that you can make them big and they will still be light because they really are still made of paper. These DIY Uncle Sam Hat Earrings are such a fun way to add a little red, white, and blue to your outfit!

Supplies:

  • Uncle Sam Hat SVG Cut File & Clipart
  • Cardstock in red, white, & blue
  • Fish hook earrings
  • 4 jump rings
  • UV resin
  • UV LED light (I use a nail lamp but sunlight also works)
  • Toothpick or pokey tool
  • Silicone mat
  • Optional Wink of Stella or glitter
  • 1/8 inch paper hole punch (if not available you can have your cutting machine cut the holes)
  • Liquid adhesive
  • Jewelry tools to open and close jump rings
  • Electronic cutting machine and software (I am using Silhouette Studio with a Cameo)

Bring in the assembled SVG for Uncle Sam hat to your cutting machine software.

Size the hat to the size you want your earring. I went with 1.75” to be extra fun but I actually prefer around 1” for most earrings I make.

If you are using a hole punch for the hardware hole, skip this step. If you are having the machine cut the holes for the hardware, do that now. Group the hat layers together. Duplicate the hat. Put a 1/8” hole (0.125 in) in the spot that you want to put the hardware. Select the hole circle and the grouped hat and choose the “subtract” function. In Silhouette Studio it is in the Object menu under Modify. Once this is selected, the hole goes through all the layers. If you want the hole in the same spot for both earrings, you will cut this twice. If you want the holes in different locations, use the extra duplication we made at the beginning of this step to add a hole.

Duplicate the hat, if you just have one, and separate the layers.

Cut all the layers in cardstock.

Assemble and adhere all the layers. This is where the DIY Uncle Sam Hat Earrings start to come together!

If you didn’t have the machine cut your holes, use a 1/8” hole punch and punch them now.

Use a Wink of Stella pen to add a glittery shine to the red part of the hats. You can also use glue and loose glitter. Let this application dry.

Place on silicone mat. Apply a thin and even layer of UV resin to the hat, making sure not to clog the hardware hole. Use a toothpick or pokey tool to help level it and poke holes. The resin does level mostly on its own but you can help guide it.

Carefully slide hats into UV LED nail lamp. Run the lamp for 2 minutes. Your pieces are now cured.

If you don’t have a smooth layer of resin, you can add another layer and cure.

Do the resin steps on the back side too. NOTE: Sometimes I don’t like the backside and might add the same design on both sides or add a glittered back.

Use jewelry tools, add 2 jump rings and a fishhook earring to each hat.
