Hello friends! This is Linh or LV Handcrafted across the socials. Did you know you can foil your printables? Use transfer foil to add some bling and extra shine to any of your printables or paper projects by foiling them!
You just need some basic office supplies and transfer foil! Instead of printing your design using an inkjet printer, you will want to print using a laser printer. Not everyone has a laser printer at home, but you can take your file to a print shop (e.g. Kinko’s) or possibly at your workplace.
The next office supply you’ll need is your laminator. There are specialized foiling machines that are designed for transfer foil; however, a $20-30 laminator will do the job just as well!
Finally, you’ll want some foil! Foil comes in multiple types and colors. The type you’ll need is called transfer foil (not hot foil). The difference is that transfer foil requires a medium or adhesive of some kind to transfer the foil from the carrier sheet to the substrate you want to foil onto.
Quick Steps:
- Print your design on your laser printer
- Place your transfer foil over your printed design (with the pretty side face up)
- Place your paper with the foil on top between some thin copy paper
- Feed this stack through your laminator.
TIPS:
- I feed the stack through the laminator 2-3 times and rotate it in different directions each pass.
- I print on at least 80lb cardstock. This increases the thickness of the stack and helps more heat to transfer the foil.
- Design with thicker lines will foil more successfully.
